Our Process

Best Practices

UMass Medical School's Disability Evaluation Services fully understands the regulatory complexities of the disability determination process. Our experienced, highly trained team of Skilled Professional Medical Personnel work to continually improve and streamline the application and adjudication processes, resulting in accurate and timely decisions.

Our Process
Using established processes, Disability Evaluation Services carefully reviews applications for underserved and vulnerable populations seeking Medicaid or other disability-based public benefits.

Our Disability Review Staff
Skilled Professional Medical Personnel, including registered nurses, vocational rehabilitation counselors, physicians, and psychologists, systematically evaluate each application in accordance with all applicable state and federal regulations.

Community-Based Provider Network
Disability Evaluation Services utilizes a network of community-based consultative examiners throughout Massachusetts. Specialties include internal medicine, psychology, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, ophthalmology, and neurology.

Quality Assurance
A robust Quality Assurance Committee, staffed by clinical managers, physicians, and psychologists, systematically performs randomized detailed reviews on processed cases. Results are analyzed, compared to national and state benchmarks, and disseminated to provide a continuous feedback loop and proactively identify training needs.

Metrics
Every unit within Disability Evaluation Services—from intake to sign-off and closure—measures timeliness at each step of the process.
