Guidelines for Students Experiencing Flu Symptoms

The following are guidelines to follow if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms including:

    • Fever
    • Cough
    • Sore throat
    • Malaise
    • Headache
    • Myalgias
    • Chills
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea

Students who are sick should stay home until they are recovered and a febrile 24 hours off of antipyretics.   Exposed students are defined as being within six feet of a person with flu when neither the employee nor patient is wearing surgical mask or when not wearing an N-95 respirator during a cough inducing procedure, must call Family Medicine to be triaged and may be offered Tamiflu.   Please refer to http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1 for more detailed information about seasonal and H1N1 flu, including symptom management, prevention and emergency warning signs.

Any student that has been out of class/clinical with flu symptoms must call the Family Medicine Clinic to be screened and cleared before returning to class/clinical. (This may be able to be done over the phone.)  SHS is responsible for reporting any known or suspected cases of seasonal or H1N1 flu to the hospitals infection control office per order of the state DPH. This would be for tracking purposes only.

    • If you are not fully recovered, or if it has been less than 5 days, SHS will delay your return to school.

Note:

If someone has been out 5 days but is not recovered and a febrile, we are not allowing them to return, as they are still potentially contagious.
If you are ill and/or have any questions please call the Family Medicine Office (508) 334-2818.
