Residency Program

Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Managed Care Pharmacy Residency
Accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, in partnership with the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy

Postgraduate pharmacists have daily opportunities to make a difference in patients’ lives while participating in the ASHP/AMCP Accredited Postgraduate (PGY1) Managed Care Pharmacy Residency at UMass Medical School’s Clinical Pharmacy Services. Our current and former residents become contributing members of a pharmacy team that has a mission-driven approach to providing safe, effective, and cost-efficient pharmaceutical care and education.

With an application deadline of Jan. 15, 2010, this one-year training program gives residents the opportunity to provide optimal patient care as they work with Medicaid agencies and nonprofit managed care organizations across the nation. Functioning as members of our operational and clinical teams, residents have specific responsibilities:

  • Formulary management through preparation and presentation of evidence-based clinical recommendations
  • Problem-solving through personal clinical judgment and in collaborative team discussions
  • Quality assurance analyses to monitor trends and potential impact on clinical and economic outcomes
  • Business management, including budget design and marketing
  • Participation in day-to-day clinical activities, as well as development of new initiatives
  • Application of clinical research skills
  • Enhancement of business and health care communication skills
  • In-house patient care with a multidisciplinary health care team

In Clinical Pharmacy Services’ professional, office-based environment, residents have the opportunity for personalized training, challenges, and growth. As contributing members of our pharmacy team, residents enjoy many benefits:

  • Personal workspace
  • Regular hours
  • Salary with insurance benefits
  • Paid holiday, personal, vacation, and sick time
  • Professional development and conference attendance
  • Named credit on all your published work
