Research Facilities
Advanced Center for Clinical Education and Science (ACCES)
With plans to expand T1, T2, and T3 research capacity, UMMS and its clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC) are building an Advanced Center for Clinical Education and Science (ACCES). The ACCES building, a 258,000 sq ft facility, will accommodate clinical space needs of four Centers of Excellence: Cancer, Cardiovascular, Diabetes, and Musculoskeletal. Also included will be the Conquering Diseases Clinical Research Center, a 18,221 sq ft dedicated to support the ambulatory clinical research of the UMass Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Centers of Excellence.
Additional and related occupants planned for the building are the newly created Department of Quantitative Health Sciences under the leadership of Catarina Kiefe, MD, PhD. The new department provides researchers with expertise in biostatistics, study design, and health informatics. It is also the primary academic home for clinical investigators conducting research that transcends traditional clinical, epidemiological, behavioral, and health services research that leads to tangible benefits in patient’s physical, mental and social health.
The Albert Sherman Center
Also under development is the 500,000 sq ft Albert Sherman Center, an energy efficient and environmentally sustainable - aiming for LEED certification of silver or better. Sherman Center plans designate up to 350,000 sq ft for wet research, research cores, lab support, and a vivarium. It will house the University of Massachusetts Advanced Therapeutics Cluster (UMATC), a consortium of three technology driven-translational research enterprises:
- RNA Therapeutics Institute
- Center for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine
- Gene Therapy Center
The mission of each center or institute is to spawn new translational therapies based on a core technology. The clustering of the three centers recognizes the important areas of interconnectivity, such as the use of viral vectors to delivery of RNAi or the use of genetic modification to optimize stem cell function in the context of regenerative medicine applications.
The Biotechs
Two Biotech is a 75,000 square foot research facility in the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park.
Four Biotech – Level Three provides another 33,000 square feet dedicated to research.
Aaron Lazare Medical Research Building
The Aaron Lazare Medical Research building adjacent to the campus parking garage is a 10-story, 360,000-square-foot research building; and
UMass Memorial Health Care
UMass Memorial Health Care is an integrated clinical system that includes a 388-bed, teaching hospital on the main UMMS campus.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center located in Waltham, founded in 1969, is one of the first Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (MRDDRC) and University Affiliated Programs (UAP) in the United States. Because of Eunice Kennedy Shriver's life-long commitment to improving the welfare of persons with mental retardation, the Center was named in her honor.
Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Research Institute
Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Research Institute is a 50,000 square-foot research facility adjacent to Worcester State Mental Health Hospital and the Biotechnology Research Park;
Massachusetts Biologic Laboratory (MBL)
The MBL, located in Jamaica Plain, is the only publicly operated, FDA-licensed vaccine manufacturing facility in the country. Throughout their history, the labs have introduced vaccines that are used throughout the state to prevent diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and other diseases.
