| Elective Description: The goal of this elective is to improve students’ knowledge of the process of organ donation, to better understand the role of physicians, and to appreciate the impact of organ donation on all affected parties including donor families and potential recipients. Components included (1) following the hospital course of deceased donors in the UMass ICU up to and including organ and tissue recovery in the operating room, (2) attendance of medical appointments for the workup of potential living kidney donors, (3) participation in multidisciplinary clinics and meetings for evaluation of potential organ recipients, (4) didactic sessions organized by NEOB and UMass-Memorial, and (5) participation in various activities at NEOB. |
Note: B2/ Students must engage in the type of clinical care carried out by the clinicians practicing in this field but may not have direct patient care as a major feature of the elective. |
