Department of Psychiatry

As the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’s Department of Psychiatry, and a national leader in public sector psychiatry, our mission is to promote and conduct state-of-the-art and recovery-informed patient care that is integrated with our research, teaching and community partnership goals and activities to help individuals and families transform their lives through recovery from mental illness and addiction.

We are proud of being part of the larger UMass community, as part of the top 10 Academic Medical Center, UMMHC, and Nobel prize-winning UMMS. We also value our strong partnerships with other state agencies, the VA, and our other community partners.

Outstanding Clinical Services: We are the largest provider of psychiatric services in Central Massachusetts with more than 250 faculty and 2000 staff, including our UMMHC services Adult Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and collaborations with the Department of Mental Health and Veterans Affairs Health Care in our Public Sector Psychiatry Division. In addition, the Student Counseling Service (SCS) provides counseling, psychotherapy, assistance with stress management, and educational programs on emotional well being for our graduate, medical, and nursing students. People come to the Student Counseling Service seeking personal growth and greater self-understanding, as well as healthier psychological functioning.

Innovative Educational and Training Programs: The UMMS Department of Psychiatry seeks to train psychiatrists who are proficient in clinical care, teaching, scholarly activities, administration, and patient advocacy. One of the greatest strengths of the department is a working environment based on strongly collegial relationships between residents and faculty, in a setting that includes a great breadth of clinical sites and scholarly inquiry.

Research Advances: Faculty and staff in the Department of Psychiatry working in the Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Research Institute, Center for Comparative NeuroImaging, Center for Psychopharmacologic Research and Treatment, Center for Mental Health Services Research, Law and Psychiatry, and other UMMS Research areas have made substantial scholarly contributions to the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience. Our graduates have entered careers throughout the country in private practice, community public sector psychiatry, academic psychiatry, behavioral sciences research, administrative psychiatry and psychology.

Workplace of Choice: We value diversity and flexibility in our faculty and staff, as well as faculty and staff career development and positive work-life balance. The Department’s Career Development and Research Office supports this effort, including helping clinicians, educators, and researchers to come together on important topics through our Academic Interest Groups.
