Elective Description: The main goal of this elective is to expose students to the unique issues involved in Women's Mental Health. The student will spend time with multiple health care providers in different settings in order to learn about the mental health needs of women who are pregnant and postpartum, and those with gynecologic and breast cancers. Patients with other difficulties that overlap Psychiatry and Obstetrics-Gynecology will also be featured including patients with premenstrual syndromes, emotional difficulties during perimenopause as well as other related disorders. Because Women’s Health is consultative in nature, a significant portion of the elective will be spent on the psychosomatic medicine service. Other opportunities could be possible based on the student's special interests when available. Also included in this elective is a writing assignment which could be a case review or a literature search on a related Women's Mental Health topic of interest to the student.
