Dr. Alexis Henry is Director of the Disability, Health and Employment Policy Unit at UMass Medical School's Center for Health Policy and Research. Within DHEP, she manages a team of researchers, project directors and research staff examining the intersection of health, disability and employment for people with disabilities served by public programs. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the DHEP unit employs a participatory action research framework to research and evaluation efforts, actively collaborating with stakeholder including policy maker, program planners, other researchers, services providers, employers, and people with disabilities and their families. Currently Dr. Henry is the Principal Investigator for the MA Medicaid Infrastructure and Comprehensive Employment Opportunities (MI-CEO) Grant from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which provides core funding for the Work Without Limits initiative. Work Without Limits is a statewide effort to promote employment opportunities and outcomes for people with disabilities through a broad-based communications and marketing efforts, consultation and technical assistance to providers and employers on issues related to disability employment, provider training on delivery of best practices (including train-the-trainer strategies), and policy support to state agencies including MassHealth and other disability serving agencies, including the promotion of the Massachusetts Medicaid Buy-in Program for working adults with disabilities. She is also Principal Investigator for a Social Security Administration-funded Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) grant, which provides work incentives benefits counseling services to individuals with disabilities to help them make informed decisions about the impact of employment and earnings on disability benefits.
Prior to joining UMass Medical School’s Center for Health Policy and Research, Dr. Henry served as Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy at Boston University’s Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and was Director of the Rehabilitation Research Core at the UMass Medical School’s Center for Mental Health Services Research.
Dr. Henry is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UMass Medical School. She earned her doctoral degree in therapeutic studies, as well as a master’s degree, at Boston University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Tufts University.
