As Senior Director of the Applied Policy Research Unit at UMass Medical School’s Center for Health Policy and Research, Dr. Thomas McLaughlin brings years of experience with a broad range of health care topics, especially system interventions integrating mental health services into primary care, workplace effects of mental disorders, chronic disease management, and quality measurement. His leadership in research and policy fosters the use of biomedical innovations in real-world settings and diverse populations.

Dr. McLaughlin’s work at the Center for Health Policy and Research has included a range of health policy content areas, such as pediatric and adult behavioral health in primary care settings, pharmaceutical policy, end-of-life care, clinical change interventions, and health information exchange. As the Principal Investigator of a five-year program funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, he is working toward creating infrastructure that will support intervention and practice research for integration of behavioral health care for chronically medically ill adults in primary care populations. He is co-Principal Investigator of the federally funded National Children’s Study at UMass Medical School, one of 36 centers studying the role of genes and the environment on children’s health.

Dr. McLaughlin serves as Professor in both the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Psychiatry at UMass Medical School.

Dr. McLaughlin earned his doctoral degree in health policy and biostatistics at Harvard University. He holds a master’s degree in theology from Notre Dame University and a master’s degree in molecular biology and biophysics from State University of New York, Binghamton. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology/chemistry from Kings College.
