2013 UMass Life Sciences Moment Fund (LSMF): Funding Call
The University of Massachusetts Center for Clinical & Translational Science is pleased to announce a funding call for the UMass Life Sciences Moment Fund (LSMF) 2013. The UMass LSMF supports projects that are inter-campus in orientation and directed towards life sciences projects related to clinical and translational research. Current and future projects supported by this fund are envisioned to advance the therapeutic, device, intervention, etc., under study along the translational pipeline. The fund serves to spur inter-campus collaboration and strengthen the University's research portfolio in clinical and translational research. To support this mission, projects must include at least one investigator from the UMass Worcester Campus and a collaborator from at least one of the other UMass campuses. By providing seed funding to outstanding faculty members, this fund facilitates the development of faculty-to-faculty networks within the University system, thereby leveraging the considerable expertise and resources that exist on the individual campuses. It is assumed that successful projects will attract additional funding from extramural sources.
New this year, the LSMF will be coordinated more closely with the UMass President's Office Science and Technology (S&T) Initiatives Fund.

2013 UMCCTS Clinical Research Scholar (K12) Award: Request for Proposals
Drs. John Keaney, Jr., and Douglas Ziedonis are pleased to announce the UMass Center for Clinical & Translational Science 2013 Clinical Research Scholar (K12) Award: Request for Proposals. Training of investigators who will make a career of innovative, hypothesis-driven clinical and translational research is a top priority of the UMCCTS. The Clinical Research Scholar (K12) Program has been developed to address this need. The training program will combine coursework, seminars, and mentored research.
The deadline for submission of Letter of Intent and accompanying documentation is: Thursday, January 24, 2013 by 5:00 PM (EST) to wanda.depasquale@umassmed.edu.

The Clinical Research Scholar program has made the following changes to the 2013 RFA:
ELIGIBILITY – NEW LANGUAGE
We have expanded the applicant program eligibility to now include:
Faculty who are still not six years post the completion of their post-doctoral or fellowship training.
Post-doctoral fellow applicants are in most cases not eligible to enter the program any earlier than their second year of post-doctoral fellowship.
Exceptional candidates with less than two years of post-doctoral training may receive special permission to apply. To apply for a waiver, please send Wanda DePasquale (wanda.depasquale@umassmed.edu) the following information NO LATER than 5PM EST on Thursday, January 17th: applicant’s CV, letter from the applicant’s Department or Program Chair justifying the request for a waiver.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1) $25K of Support
Q: Is this for each of the years with the Department supplying an additional $25K or is this a one-time $25K for each?
A: The Clinical Research Scholar (K12) award will provide $25,000 in Year 1 for research supplies. This is a one-time payment that the awardee can use over the life of the award. The Department is required to provide a minimum of $25,000 for research supplies. It is expected that the Departmental funds for research supplies should be available to the applicant in the first year of funding.
2) Another Pending K Award
Q: I have another K award pending and will know if I have a fundable score before the full proposal deadline. Am I allowed to submit a LOI?
A: Yes, but you will be required to withdraw your proposal to the Clinical Research Scholars (K12) Program if you receive a fundable score.

UMass CCTS 2012/2013 Pilot Project Program (PPP) Award
The UMass Center for Clinical & Translational Science (UMCCTS) is announcing the 2012/2013 Pilot Project Program (PPP) Award. This program differs from other intramural funding in that the key goal of the PPP award is to effect a qualitative change in the way the work is conducted. Individual project awards (up to $100,000 for 1 year; up to $150,000 for 2 years) will be made on a competitive basis to enable investigators to accelerate the translation or innovative, cutting edge research. The intent of funding is to speed-up the rate of progress to move a research project, clinical finding, or other discovery into a broader network of activities, while maximizing the breadth of interdisciplinary skills applied to the research question. We are particularly interested in proposals, which feature a clinical scientist working with a basic scientist and proposals with an emphasis on community-based research.

New Pilot Program - "The Next Hundred Million" Pilot Projects 2012: Request for Proposals
The University of Massachusetts Center for Clinical & Translational Science (UMCCTS) and MassBiologics of the University of Massachusetts Medical School are pleased to announce a funding announcement for "The Next Hundred Million" Pilot Projects (NHMPP). The NHMPP will serve as a dedicated pool of funding to spur innovative collaborations between UMMS, MassBiologics of UMMS and investigators across the UMass System with the goal of enhancing the translation of discoveries for clinical use. Projects must include at least one investigator from MassBiologics of UMMS and a faculty investigator from at least one UMass campus. Individual project awards (up to $100,000 for 1 year; up to $150,000 for two years) will be made on a competitive basis to enable investigators to accelerate the translation of innovative cutting-edge research.

The UMass Center for Clinical & Translational Science (UMCCTS) and Pfizer's Center for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) announce the 2nd Annual CTI Request for Proposals
The UMCCTS is excited to announce a Request for Proposals (RFP) for this year's round of funding from Pfizer's Center for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI). CTI is an innovative Pfizer program that partners with leading academic medical centers nationwide to accelerate the translation of novel biomedical insights to the clinic. CTI enables translational medicine by accelerating research and development of discoveries from target identification of proof of mechanism in a Phase I clinical trial.

- Autoimmunity (especially Systemic Lupus Erythematosus / Lupus Nephritis)
- Renal Disease (kidney injury / Lupus Glomerulonephritis, IgA Nephropathy)
- Cardiovascular (Congestive Heart Failure, Post-Myocardial Infarction and Acute Coronary Syndrome)
