Requesting an H-1B Application: Overview of Process and Paperwork
If you believe that a current or prospective UMMS employee qualifies for H-1B sponsorship, please contact an Immigration Coordinator to discuss this. If the ISSO gives you the go-ahead to proceed and/or asks for more preliminary screening information, please proceed to Step 1, below.
Step 1: Department submits H Intake Forms (H-1B eligibility screening forms) to the ISSO
Please do not complete the H Intake Forms until/unless instructed by a Specialist in the ISSO. Keep in mind that another type of visa may be more appropriate.

Step 2: ISSO reviews H Intake Form
If the ISSO determines that the employee is eligible for H-1B sponsorship, we will begin preliminary steps with the Department of Labor (DOL), which include:
- Obtaining a “prevailing wage” determination
- Submitting a Labor Condition Application (LCA)
Once these preliminary steps are successfully completed, we will send the department contact the following items:
- An e-mail with instructions to gather the items needed for Step 3. Please note that we ask that you notify the employee of these instructions once you hear from the ISSO.
- A faxed copy of the certified LCA with instructions on how and when to post it
Throughout the H-1B application process, the ISSO will contact you if there are problems and/or concerns that arise. We therefore recommend that you wait for notification from an Immigration Specialist before proceeding to Step 3.
Step 3: Department and employee complete H-1B Application Checklist together. Department submits completed checklist to the ISSO.

Step 4: ISSO prepares final H-1B application and submits to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for processing.
USCIS processing can take several weeks to several months. The ISSO will notify the department and the employee when the application is approved. Please feel free to contact the ISSO for more information.
