Interpreter Proficiency Assessment
Effective medical interpretation requires full mastery of the languages spoken by both patient and provider, knowledge of medical terminology, and a clear understanding of the role of interpreter. It is not uncommon for bilingual staff to “interpret” for a provider. However, these well intentioned individuals may lack the skills and training to do so effectively and this can lead to disastrous consequences for patients. The Office of Community Programs can:
- Assess the proficiency of your interpreters
- Identify content gaps
- Provide remedial training for interpreters
- Provide training for clinicians on how to work with interpreters
Assessments include an evaluation of oral fluency as well as a written test to gauge the interpreters understanding of the parameters of the medical interpreter role. A summary report of results is provided and, if desired, a customized training program is developed.
