“As health care professionals, we really need to learn and understand about the people that we’re seeing: their health beliefs, their traditions of getting health care, and the differences that they’re facing here in the United States.”

Warren Ferguson, MD, Vice Chair, UMMS Department of Family Medicine and Community Health

Translation Services

Far too often healthcare messages are created without taking into consideration the cultural background and or literacy level of the target population. The end result is a lack of understanding by the intended recipients, which can lead to consequences like treatment non-compliance or medication errors. Conversely, culturally appropriate messages that are targeted to the appropriate literacy level of the target audience are more likely to lead to the desired level of understanding and or behavior change.

Through one of our affiliated partners, a skilled team of translators, editors, proofreaders and quality control specialists are available to ensure that document translations, including both text and illustrations, reflect cultural and contextual accuracy and appropriateness. Recommendations on appropriate media and distribution strategies are also provided.

Translation services are routinely available in the following languages:

  • Albanian
  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • English
  • Khmer
  • Polish
  • Portuguese (European)
  • Portuguese (Brazilian)
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Vietnamese

Upon request, translation for other languages may be arranged.
