“As health care professionals, we really need to learn and understand about the people that we’re seeing: their health beliefs, their traditions of getting health care, and the differences that they’re facing here in the United States.”

Warren Ferguson, MD, Vice Chair, UMMS Department of Family Medicine and Community Health

Interpreter Services

As the cultural and linguistic diversity of our population continues to increase, many organizations struggle to provide sufficient qualified interpreter services to the volume of patients requiring this service. The Office of Community Programs (OCP) can help organizations evaluate a number of options for addressing their needs. These might include:

  • Evaluating and selecting a telephonic service
  • Evaluating and selecting a qualified dispatch service
  • Developing an on-site interpreter service either alone or in partnership with other community based organizations.

Language Link Interpreter Dispatch Services

Through our affiliated partner, the Central Mass Area Health Education Center (CMAHEC), well-trained and experienced interpreters are available to facilitate effective communication in clinical, legal and conference settings. These interpreter services are available to residents of Central Massachusetts and include the following languages:

  • Albanian
