The Department of Surgery of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, chaired by Demetrius Litwin, MD, is an academic surgical program located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Clinical care encompasses the three main campuses of UMass Memorial Medical Center (University, Memorial, and Hahnemann), as well as affiliated hospitals. The department is committed to providing state-of- the-art surgical care to patients from throughout the New England region. In addition, this busy and growing department is actively involved with advancing the art of surgery, through research focused on new approaches to patient care, as well as surgical training and education of the next generation of surgeons.

Dr. Jessica Simons, UMass resident, received 2nd place at the New England Surgical Society Resident Essay Competition, on September 12, 2009, for "Surgery and Radiation Therapy for Abdominal and Retroperitoneal Sarcoma: Both Necessary and Sufficient?"


Melissa Murphy, UMass surgery resident, won the Resident and Fellows Award at the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Chicago, June 1st 2009 for her project "Major complications after laparoscopic cholecystectomy-a simple risk score". This prestigious award carries a $1000 prize.
