UMMS Requirements for Appointment
Graduates of a U.S. or Canadian  Medical school
  

 

Graduates of LCME- and AOA- approved U.S. medical schools must be able to comply with the following requirements:

blue_pushpin1.gif1. Licensing Exams Requirements: 

All applicants must demonstrate a passing score on:

  • USMLE United States Medical Licensing Examination  Step 1 or equivalent examinations
  • COMLEX for graduates of osteopathic medical schools or
  • MCCQU   licensing exam for graduates of Canadian medical schools

US and Canadian medical school seniors who have not yet taken or who failed on the first attempt to pass USMLE Step 2 may be appointed to a UMass GME Program on the condition that, if they fail to pass Step 2 by the end of their first postgraduate year, they will not be eligible for promotion to the PGY -2 year and may be dismissed.

All residents are required to pass USMLE Step 3 by the end of their PGY-2 year. All applicants for PGY3 or higher level position MUST have passed Step 3 of USMLE or COMLEX or MCCQU prior to their date of hire.

  • Appointment eligibility is subject to the Board of Registration in Medicine’s requirements for licensure (some programs may require full rather than limited licensure Requirements for full or limited licensure for US and international medical graduates are listed on the Board of Registration Web Site at www.massmedboard.org/physician/ 
  • Proposed changes for limited license eligibility include the requirement that all applicants pass USMLE step 1 and 2 CK and CS  

 blue_pushpin1.gif3.Requirements for applicants who had previous or have current GME positions:

  • applicant seeking to transfer to a UMass program or change specialties must submit a letter of recommendation from all previous program directors and the current program director, before receiving a GME appointment.

  • All applicants must meet the joint UMMS/UMMMC Graduate Medical Education Credentialing requirements  before an appointment can be finalized.

The Graduate Medical Education Appointment Agreement is not binding until the applicant has been issued a Limited or Full Massachusetts Medical License by the Board of Registration in Medicine, has been approved by the UMass Memorial Medical Center Resident/Fellow Credentialing Subcommittee, and meets all other employment requirements of the University of Massachusetts including, but not limited to, (1) completion of payroll and benefits forms; (2) any necessary work authorization forms; (3) certification of compliance with physical examination and other health and safety requirements; and (4) completion of a malpractice insurance application; and .  Each appointment is limited to a maximum of one year (twelve months), which in most cases begins July 1st and ends June 30th.
