Steven M. Banks, Ph.D.  was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry. He had extensive experience with large state and national databases, and worked with a number of states investigating the relationship between mental illness and criminal justice involvement. He divided his time at Umass between the Center for Health Policy and Research and the Center for Mental Health Services Research. He was previously the Director of the Mental Health Statistics Unit for New York State for 10 years, and was a mathematical statistician for the National Institutes of Health.

It is with great sorrow that we note the unexpected passing of Dr. Steven Banks on August 10, 2007. Steve's unique contribution to the field of health services research, to UMMS, and to researchers, providers, and consumer/survivor/recovering persons across the country is without equal. His influence, as a professional colleague and great friend, is extraordinary, and will continue to guide us in our work and in our daily lives. Please click on his name to view his page with links to a guest book and additional information about Steve.
