We are delighted to welcome three new faculty members to the Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Department this fall. Gang Han
joins us from the Molecular Foundry at UC Berkeley. Gang will use his formidable skills in synthetic materials chemistry to build optically-active nanoparticles for both imaging and targeted delivery of reagents to cells and organelles. He will also explore the application of upconverting nanoparticles to the light-activated delivery of reagents at selective sites in cells. Andrei Korostelev
, the first recruit into the RNA Therapeutics Institute, joins us from UC Santa Cruz. Andrei will pursue crystallographic studies of structure/function relationships in prokaryotic and eukaryotic ribosomes, with particular interests in the mechanisms of tetracycline resistance via extrinsic protein factors and the control of translation during translocation across membranes. Scott Shaffer, the Director of the Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Facility, joins us from the University of Washington. Scott has extensive experience in cutting-edge proteomics methods and in metabolomics, and he will be a major asset as we build our translational research program at the UMMS.
